The support for our Olympic medallists continues, and so do the rewards.
Lee Zii Jia, Aaron Chia, and Soh Wooi Yik each received a Chery Tiggo 7 Pro car for their efforts and contributions. The Malaysian heroes didn’t just drive away with brand new cars but each of them also received RM100,000, courtesy of the National Sports Council (MSN). Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik previously received RM50,000 each for their bronze medals during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The cars given by Chery Malaysia to the players are worth 123,800 each. Zii Jia, however, was not present during the handover ceremony as he is still in Yokohama at the ongoing Japan Open.
And no, the rewards did not stop with the cars and cash.
Hannah Yeoh, who was present during the handover ceremony said all 3 medallists will receive RM2,000 worth of pension money, effective September 2024. Hannah also had a suggestion for other private companies in Malaysia in terms of showing appreciation.
“We hope more private companies would follow Chery’s lead in supporting Malaysian athletes. This is the 2nd time Aaron and Wooi Yik have brought home bronze, and the MSN has decided to reward them RM100,000 each.”
“I’m giving the car to my dad”
In a media conference shared by Chery Malaysia on its Facebook page, Wooi Yik revealed that he would not be using the brand new Chery. He’s gifting the ride to his dad who prefers a bigger car.
“I will give this car to my father. This is a token of appreciation to my family because they took care of me from the beginning. Without them, I wouldn’t have made it with the success I have today.”
Wooi Yik also said that the car is by far the biggest surprise he has given his dad, and previously, it was a wallet.
Once again, congratulations to our Olympic medallists! We can’t wait to see your future achievements!
