Anwar has been serving a five-year jail term after he was convicted for sodomy, and was due to be released on Jun 8. Under Malaysian law, Anwar is disqualified from running for office for five years after his release, unless he is pardoned by the King.
He is currently recuperating from surgery in Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital. The surgery is likely due to a shoulder injury he had sustained.
With the full pardon and release from prison, that would mean that he could then return to politics and potentially become the prime minister of Malaysia!
