Now there won’t be any confusion when you’re ordering your favourite plate of char kuetiau!

Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malaysia officially announced today that the official Bahasa Malaysia spelling for your favourite popular flat rice noodles is kuetiau.

The spelling we’re used to is usually Koay Teow which is based on the Chinese dialect the word is based on.

Netizens have been responding well to the change of spelling and its standardisation. They also hoped that more vendors will take this suggestion and implement it into their businesses as well.

Kuching Coffeeshop and Restaurant Owners Association committee member Kapitan Tan Yit Sheng told The Borneo Post that he hopes the government body will create greater awareness on the correct spellings of dishes and even suggested that such standardisations could be expanded to other dishes, such as ‘kolo mee’, ‘laksa’ and ‘tauhu soup’.

Another kuetiau vendor also said he welcomes the standardisation, saying that this will avoid any further confusion among his customers.

What other spellings do you think should be standardised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka? Drop some suggestions in the comment section!
