For those who went to school during the time when there was the special PTS exams, when Math and Science had always been taught in Bahasa Malaysia, when KRU was a boy band, and when only the super rich kids had cellphones of their own, here’s a shout out to you all via a walk down memory lane with our favourite snacks that we got from supermarkets and these lovely people:
1. Push-pops
This unique lollipop gets the thumb’s up – literally!
2. Marukawa Bubblegum
For those with weirdly strict parents who won’t allow bubblegum chewing, this was considered pretty bad-a$$. Don’t get me started with the free tattoo that comes with it.
3. Hi-Sour
Remember how this sweet makes your mouth water not because it’s delicious but for it’s awesomely hyper sour taste that comes first?
4. Choki-Choki
Ah, the ultimate and most simplest of snacks – pure decadent chocolate in a straw-like wrap. And for only 20 sen back then, too.
5. Mamee Monster
During that time, the sound “Mami” can mean other than your mom, especially when said in a gruff voice. Remember those little flavouring pack that were so good, you’d lick the insides of the packet after pouring it on your mamee. Anyone?
6. Ice-cream potong
Local favourite flavours frozen on a stick – what could be better?!
7. Yupi Burger
While everyone else had gummy bears, we here had these juicy and chewy “burgers”. Check out the whole set (but the burgers were still the best because you can eat them slice by slice!).
8. Alphabet Biscuits
9. Ding Dang, Tora and Jojo
Kids who buy Ding Dang, Tora and especially Jojo are more “atas” since they cost more than your usual treats.
10. Roti Krim
11. Super Ring / Rota
12. Nyam Nyam
13. Yan Yan
14. Ni Ni
15. Haw flakes
Ever tried shoving one stack of these in one go? It’s awesome! Now how about two?
16. Sugus
Ah, our go-to chewable candies. So popular that even the school bus driver have them at the ready to give out.
17. Roti Ice-cream
Mmm… Three scoops of Yam, Chocolate / Strawberry and Durian / Jagung shoved in a hot dog bun. Best sandwich ever.
18. Nano
Remember the theme song to this unique flavoured sweets that kept repeating its name over and over? As a person with the nickname “Nona”, this writer certainly did…
19. Jelly cups
Not sure what these are officially called but the image should be enough to jog that memory.
20. Ice pop
Anyone tried to do this themselves with Coca Cola and ended up with a “pregnant” lolly?
21. Grilled seaweed
This is a popular snack for the privileged kids back then. For now, substitute the lettuce in that sandwich with these: satisfaction guaranteed. Heck, go crazy to put it in the Roti Ice-cream too!
22. Iced gems
… or as it is officially called, Fancy Gems. How many of you only ate the frosted icing and discard the biscuits?
23. Apollo layer cakes
[sociallocker]
24. Apollo wafers
25. Apollo wafer sticks
26. Wang Wang biscuit
[/sociallocker]
27. Wang Wang Mini Bread
The feeling when these melt in your mouth. Unfffff.
28. Fish muruku
29. Trix cereal
PS, these used to shape like fruits and are only available after you beg your parents endlessly
30. Mango Pudding Cups
31. Eyeglass Chocolate Candy
32. White rabbit candy
I remember furiously peeling at the edible wrap refusing to believe that it was indeed edible
33. Horlicks Malties
34. Smarties
35. Ligo Rasisin
