Recently, a video has gone viral on social media which shows Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) personnel allegedly being sent to Palestine for the ongoing Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.
The 1-minute-36-second video circulating on TikTok has since been removed, though without first creating a fake narrative believed by the Malaysian public.
In reality, the video was actually old footage from last year of a group of MAF personnel assigned to Lebanon.
MAF itself had to issue a statement denying the viral video, asserting,
“MAF denies the content of the viral video and can confirm that it is completely untrue.”
The statement further urged members of the public to not make any assumptions or spread any uncertain or false information as it could invite various speculations and cause panic among the rakyat.
MAF also stressed that spreading fake news can be prosecuted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The provision prescribes a punishment of up to 1 year of imprisonment or a fine of up to RM50,000 or both to those convicted.
