If you’ve never heard of a ‘begpacker’, the following viral image perfectly defines the term.
A play on a word coined from the word backpacker and beg, the term basically refers to travellers who don’t have money to sustain their travels and end up asking for donations at the destination country.
In Malaysia and throughout Southeast Asia, these begpackers are mostly from Western countries, with many seeing these tourists as a nuisance.
The same sentiment is shared by Malaysians, especially local Bintulu residents after a couple of foreign begpeckers can be seen on the road in the Sarawakian city asking for donations from the cars that were passing by.
As shared by the Facebook page Bintulu INFO, the two individuals were standing on an undisclosed road in Bintulu, with one of them holding a sign that reads,
“Hi. We are Russia travellers around the world without money. Please support our travel. Thanks.”
Meanwhile, the other individual can be spotted holding a cap, potentially for collecting donations from motorists.
The post has since gone viral with over 1,400 reactions and more than 516 shares, with many commenters criticising the 2 begpackers for their action.
One commenter said that it’s better to donate to the orphanage than to the two tourists, while another netizen straight up tells the two to get a job rather than begging for money to sustain their travels.
Besides that, one netizen condemned the begpackers for their “easy life” of travelling using other people’s money.
