Hidden bars have been all the rage in Malaysia for some time now and it looks like every new one that pops up is cooler than the last! A recent speakeasy that has just thrown open its doors is located in Ipoh, Perak and finding its hidden door is truly a hunt.
Known as Madam Wong, this cool new hidden bar has Oriental influences and it’s apparent in their menu and decor style. You may think that it is linked to Suzie Wong in Kuala Lumpur, but they are actually not related to each other. Two terracotta sculptures stand guard at the entrance with the name of the bar in Chinese placed in the middle, so you definitely know that you’re in the right place when you see them. Looks awesome!
Inside, the place is decked out in Asian-inspired decorations with a predominantly red theme to give it that mysterious glow. Comfy chairs provide a nice seating place for you to enjoy your tipple of choice. Of course, the yummy cocktails that they serve are inspired from the East too, with nifty names such as Madz Walked, Dragon Heart, which comes in an old-fashioned rooster bowl, and Tropical Depression.
The bar just opened not too long ago in early February and while the establishment is only 70 per cent complete at the moment, interested customers can already drop in for a sneak peek. If you’re going, do remember to call for reservations first. Once they have their grand opening, you can bet that they will be flooded with customers!
Pro tip: Since their door is so well-hidden, they have given customers clues on how to reach their place. Look for Sensation of Sound’s main entrance, then go through the glass doors at the side. From there, find the room of lockers and a secret door hidden within. Once through, head up the stairs and spot the silent terracotta soldiers for the entrance.
