Do you guys remember the scientists who chained themselves to a bank in Los Angeles, United States? They were willing to get themselves into trouble (they were arrested) in an effort to call attention on the lack of action against climate change.
Now, NASA climate scientist and author, Dr. Peter Kalmus (who was a part of the protest at the bank) is urging the general public to stop flying.
Using the hashtag #EmergencyMode, Dr. Kalmus shared that the aviation industry severely contributes to global warming.
“Understand that airplanes directly and irreversibly heat up the planet. Those who already understand this fly less or not at all, but more importantly, they call for an end to the aviation system. Everyone will understand at some point,” he wrote.
He went on to explain that carbon offsets, which are schemes that allow individuals and companies to invest in environmental conservation projects in order to balance out their own carbon footprints, don’t actually work.
“And unfortunately, carbon offsets are a scam. If they weren’t, I’d still be flying, myself.”
“The reason I harp on this is because I see it as a sort of cultural conundrum. So long as frequent flying is a thing, it means society is not trying to stop earth breakdown. This is what #EmergencyMode means – a shift into treating this as an emergency,” he added.
While it is understandable that many cannot give up flying for vacations and business trips, but none of it will be worth it if our planet is on the brink of destruction.
We really should listen to our scientists, after all, they got themselves arrested in an effort to get us to hear them out.
