Controversy has always surrounded Malaysian artist, Namewee. And things are no different with his new song, Bukit Mak (referring to an actual place in Kelantan), featuring local comedian, Harith Iskander.
The Malay classic rock-styled song speaks about the saddening conditions the Kelantanese people have to endure, from not having access to clean water to constant flooding, in not-so-subtle ways.
Following this, Independent preacher, PU Syed, shared his annoyance over the song, adding that both Namewee and Harith Iskander’s choice to use religious issues as a joke can tarnish the country’s reputation. He is also unhappy with their use of Bukit Mak as a replacement for an obscene word in the song.
“Songs like this, and Namewee’s work, actually pollute the country. You can Google it yourself, he has created too many controversies against religion, race and this country. But, I find it strange that he escapes and is not the subject to national legal action when he has done many things that tarnish the name of this country,”
“For Harith Iskander, as an actor, there are many things that you can highlight to the audience but do not defame religion or make fun of religion for any content, video clip and so on. So, my reminder to Namewee and especially Harith is don’t play with sentiments in our lives in Malaysia,” he said.
Namewee bites back.
Famously known for not remaining mum when spoken about, Namewee wasted no time in responding to PU Syed’s comments about the song, Bukit Mak.
Taking to his Facebook page, Namewee wrote, “Too many stupid politicians need to be replaced. They don’t care if the tap water is yellow, if the water and electricity supply is cut off, or if the roads are damaged as hell, they don’t have time to take care of it. Because, things like these are too difficult for them to solve.”
“On the other hand, they like to play with religious and ethnic issues, bullying artists and creators. For what? Because it’s easier to do these stupid things and it’s easier to incite people who have no brains to take the bait and support them. This is the sad state of Malaysian politics.”
