Former prime minister and Umno president, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has released a statement claiming that he was betrayed by those with positions in the party.

He mentioned that the main reason Umno suffered a huge defeat during the 14th general election was the presence of turncoats, and many of them held posts too.

As quoted by Sinar Harian in a small gathering organised by his loyal supporters,

“We only think of how we could profit. We think more for our factions, and if we don’t get what we want, we would go as far as betraying the party,”  he said.

He further explained, “In fact there are those who behaved as if they held the party ransom, and what is weirder is that they are done by those with positions so it’s not surprising then if we were to be attacked by our opponents, being seen as a party that has lost the traditional values of its struggle.”

The former prime minister has been consistently highlighting that the fall of the party is directly connected to the betrayal of many of the party leaders since his fall from power, but he refused to name any of them.

At the event, he also told reporters that the party (Umno) will be better if the traitors are weeded out.

“It’s better for people like these to leave Umno. We only want those who will die for the party,” he firmly stated.
