As Malaysians, we’re used to all kinds of unruly behaviour on the road including people cutting us off, changing lanes with signaling, turning into junctions without stopping at a stop sign and more.

But, how many of these instances were conducted by the elderly?

The KiwiwiPenang Twitter page recently shared dashcam footage of an elderly person suddenly switching 2 lanes at one go, apparently without signaling and almost causing a collision. Due to this (and many other experiences with elderly drivers), they have since called for drivers of a certain age to have to retake their driver’s test.

Test 6

KiwiwiPenang wrote, “People in their 70s should consider retaking their driver’s test. This is too dangerous.”

In the dashcam footage showcased, a car from the most left lane (lane 1) could be seen suddenly switching to the most right lane (lane 3), almost colliding with the car with the dashcam that was already in the most right lane (lane 3).

Test 7

Test 8

The open driver’s side window revealed the driver of the car to be an elderly person.

Malaysians, too, agree that the elderly should be required to take a driver’s test after a certain age.

Some also pointed out that, besides having the elderly retake their driver’s test, the authorities should also consider testing their sense of sight and hearing.

Test 1

Test 3

“I’ve been hit many times by senior citizens.”

Test 2

“It’s true, there are many old drivers in Penang who like to drive their cars as they please. I want to be angry but I know they’ll say their eyesight is bad, but they still want to drive. You have to be alert at junctions as they’ll enter the junction carelessly.”

Test 4

“The government needs to conduct reviews for drivers above the age of 60, from the aspect of the health of their eyesight and hearing to be eligible to drive.”

Test 5

“Not just retesting their driving skills, testing the sensitivity level of their sense of sight and sense of hearing should also be mandatory.”
