It was supposed to be a happy and joyous celebration as families and friends gathered at the Pandamaran Sports Complex Port Klang yesterday night to ring in the new year.
At 12am last night, the audience waited with bated breath for a spectacular fireworks show to usher in year 2017.
However, things turned awry when the event started. Moments after the show began, several fireworks failed to explode in the air, instead they flew to the ground and injured some of the revellers in the crowd.
In videos that went viral on social media, the spectators can be seen scrambling for safety as the fireworks display shot towards the crowd.
The joyous moment quickly turned into chaos with people shouting “RUN RUN!” while some others stood in horror.

Currently, a total of ten adults and four children suffered injuries caused by the firework explosion.
Three of them, including an unfortunate man who has injuries to his head, sustained serious burns and were rushed to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang. The rest had burn injuries on their legs and were immediately treated by the medical personnel that were on the scene.
Meanwhile, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department is investigating the cause of the incident.
“The organiser of the event is the Klang Municipal Council (MPK), we should conclude our report on the incident in two weeks.” said Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations, Mohd Sani Harul, via FMT.
The good news is that all of the 14 patients were discharged from the hospital this morning. The annual event had 15,000 visitors and there were several teams of police, civil defense, fire and rescue department and paramedics always on standby to make sure that the spectators were safe.
What a way to ring in the new year! We hope that the injured victims have a speedy recovery!
