The iconic Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad (BSAS) has been reopened to the public since 2 February, following the completion of the first phase of its refurbishment.
While both Malaysians and tourists have been flocking to the site, particularly at night when the historical landmark is beautifully illuminated, some locals have expressed dismay at the sight of beverage vendors operating outside the building. To many, the presence of these stalls is “tainting” the majestic night view of BSAS.

“Don’t normalise this!”
In several viral Threads posts, Malaysians have urged Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to take prompt action to remove the vendors.
One user also claimed that some of the vendors are foreign nationals operating without valid business permits.

“Don’t start, and don’t normalise this. Prevent it before it spreads. DBKL, please observe and take action.”

“I don’t care about their race, but please don’t allow them to tarnish the image of this iconic building. Do the vendors have no common sense?”

Concerns regarding potential littering were also raised, with users urging authorities to intervene immediately.

Even a prominent Malaysian radio DJ, Fara Fauzana, has voiced her opposition to the vendors’ presence in front of the historic landmark.

A historic and iconic landmark
According to River of Life, the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad was constructed between 1894 and 1897 by architects A.C. Norman and R.A.J. Bidwell (with contributions from A.B. Hubback) in the Moorish Revival style. It served as a vital government office and a symbol of British administration in Kuala Lumpur prior to independence.
Located within the heritage precinct of Dataran Merdeka, the building remains one of the capital’s most significant tourist attractions and a must-visit destination.
There is no entrance fee for visitors wishing to view the building.
