Good news, motorists! If your vehicle insurance and road tax has expired and you’re dreading the hassle of renewing it then fret not! That’s because the Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai says that for three months, they will be relaxing insurance requirements for all cars and motorcycles with expired road tax.
According to The Star, owners of vehicles with expired road tax not more than three years past validity can now renew their insurance without going through Puspakom inspections. This special exercise will be available until end of June and is meant to benefit the lower income group who are driving their vehicles without a valid road tax.
In addition, Liow said that it was only necessary to pay for insurance charges now and this would be at a discounted rate as well. For example, owners of 125cc motorcycles would only have to pay RM80 compared to the normal rate of around RM100 and RM140.
“Once that is done, they can go to any JPJ office to renew the road tax. This exercise is applicable for the next three months until June. I urge all owners with expired road tax not exceeding three years to seize this opportunity to get valid ones,” he explained.
The Road Transport Department said that there are 29 million registered vehicles in the country but only 19 million of them would renew their road tax every year. Out of the 10 million who have expired road tax, about 95% are motorcycles.
Liow said that as it is now cheaper and more convenient, he hopes that more people would take advantage of this programme as it would not go on forever.
Remember to renew your road tax and insurance before this programme ends!
