With such hectic schedules, it’s a good thing we can settle a bunch of important errands online or via apps now; even settle other pressing matters online including our summonses, checking for any demerit points issued by Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ), renewing our road tax, and more! We were able to renew our driver’s licenses online via the MyEG website. So canggih!
Unfortunately, as of 1 January 2018, the online service to renew our driver’s license had been discontinued.
However, since 1 January 2018, this online service was no longer available and an announcement by MyEG stated this:
In a nutshell, they no longer offer this online renewal option because MyEG only provides applicants with the outdated, laminated CDL card and not the new and improved plastic card (the one that looks similar to your IC), which is what everyone uses now.
However, it sounds like an “enhanced and improved service” will be up and running “soon”. Let’s just hope it really is soon!
But my driver’s license expiring soon! Where else can I renew it?
Simple! Just visit your nearest POS Malaysia OR JPJ branch and:
- Bring along your IC and existing driver’s license
- At the counter, inform the teller how many years you want to renew your license
- Make payment and wait for your new CDL to be prepared on the spot
You can opt for a minimum renewal duration of one year and a maximum of five years. It will cost you RM30 for each year. For example, should you decide on a three-year renewal, the amount will come up to RM30 X 3 = RM90.
What if my driver’s license expired already? Must pay fine ah?
Unfortunately, yes. If you forget to renew your license before the expiry date but continue driving, you will be smacked with a fine! Here are the fine rates for both motorcyclists and drivers with expired licenses:
So basically this is the amount you’ll be fined based on how long your driver’s license has expired:
- 1 – 15 days: RM150 fine
- 16 – 30 days: RM200 fine
- 31 – 60 days: RM300 fine
Alternatively, if you somehow forgot to renew your expired driver’s license for three years or more, your license would become completely null and void. Meaning, it’s no longer renewable!
Instead, you will be issued an eRayuan letter to obtain the “L” license from any JPJ office (which would cost you RM30), and you would have to re-sit the practical driving test 2 and 3 all over again.
After passing the tests however, you still won’t get your CDL, but you will be given the two-year probationary (P) license. Yes, this means you’ll have to stick that ginormous, bright red P sticker on the front and back windscreen of your car!
Only after two years as a “P driver” will you be able to upgrade to the official Competent Driver’s License (CDL).
So you better check your driver’s license and make sure it hasn’t expired! Set a reminder on your phone to make sure you remember the expiry date too! Better safe than sorry!
