Catcalling is a phenomenon that most women unfortunately have experienced at least once in their life. While most times a catcalling incident only lasts a couple of seconds, the total number of times women experience it in their lifetime and the circumstances they were in when it happens can be very traumatising.
Recently, a Malaysian woman, Sofea (@dsofeaa) shared on her TikTok a disturbing story of how she was allegedly harassed by a group of five men while doing work by a pool.
When she noticed the men at the pool, she felt intimidated and became hesitant about continuing her work there. So, she called her friend to accompany her.
However, while waiting for her friend to arrive, the men allegedly started to harass her by catcalling her and disturbing her in attempts to intimidate. This led Sofea to start filming the men, presumably for proof of what happened if things were to escalate.
Confronting the men
Then, she went up to her apartment unit to ask for help from her housemates and a security guard. With them standing next to her, she summoned up the courage to confront the men.
First, she asked questions to make sure the group of men was the same one who harassed her at the pool. Although they admitted to being at the pool, they denied harassing and disturbing her.
Then, the security guard told the men not to repeat their actions and gave them a fist bump. This made Sofea angry and caused her to raise her voice as she felt that she was being disrespected.
“You didn’t even apologise to me! You better not do this to other women. Do you think we women are still scared of you guys now?
The video ended with the group getting on a lift and leaving the area. Sofea also warned the men that she has proof of their actions.

@dsofeaa ‼️‼️no woman should experience this and to the girls and women out there PLEASE do not be afraid to call out this type of guys. SPEAK UP and to the boys out there, do better. A JOKE TO YOU IS A THREAT TO US
While we applaud Sofea for standing up for herself, the situation could’ve been a lot worse. More work needs to be done to prevent harassment incidents such as this one from happening again.
