As inflation hits the globe, many people have been struggling to stay afloat and one of the things that they’ll do is to find a freelance job. Other than that, many Malaysians would also choose to leave Malaysia for the time being and get a job elsewhere.

One of the places that most Malaysians would go is Singapore. As the currency exchange from SGD to MYR is 3 times higher, many Malaysians would brave through the hardship for the sake of a better future.

Just recently, a Malaysian shared his thoughts on working in Singapore onto a Facebook page. In his post he said,

“I’ve been working in Malaysia for 3 years but I realised that I’m not able to save up much. Inflation has made things worse because prices for living goods are on the rise and I’m afraid that I won’t be able to save up much even when I’m 30.”

“I made a bold decision to only care about money and decided that maybe it’s time for me to head to Singapore and try to make a living.”

He shared that he was lucky that he found a decent job with a decent pay but as soon as he set foot into Singapore, he began to regret his decision.

“As long as you don’t overspend, I’m certain you can save up some money, but the rent here is shockingly expensive. Thankfully, the food and public transportation fees are considered low, making things slightly easier”, he added.

He explained that he is someone who doesn’t mind working hard and is willing to take on any pressure that work gives but unfortunately, most of his struggles come from his work environment where he discovered the differences between Malaysians and Singaporeans.

“I think in general; Malaysians are friendlier and more patient because I realised that most Singaporeans that I’m working with are very harsh with their words. They’d also gossip behind your back and it just makes the working environment much more toxic”, he said.

He then ended the post saying that he is unable to leave his current company as he is bound by a contract. He hopes that he is able to resign after half a year and then try finding a company that has a better work environment.

“If I had a time machine, I wouldn’t have left Malaysia in the first place. If I can’t find a better work environment, I’m heading back to Malaysia. I just hope Malaysia can do better soon; I don’t want to continue leaving my country for the sake of ‘better opportunities'”, he added.

Leaving your home country to work in a foreign land for the sake of a better future is definitely not easy. We can only hope that Malaysians around the world remember that Malaysia will always be your home.
