Koi fishes have a reputation of being one of the most expensive pond fishes and are known to be ornamental fishes, kept in ponds and aquariums in Asian households as pets.
But one Malaysian blew everyone’s mind when she shared that her parents had decided to cook their Koi fishes, which had suffocated after a power cut at their home meant that the water pump stopped working.
In a tweet shared by Nadia, she showcased the Koi fishes her parents cooked by frying them.
“There was a power trip at home and papa’s water pump stopped working for awhile. 2 of his koi fish died as a result and then he sent this photo. CAN WE EVEN EAT KOI? WHAT IS THIS BEHAVIOUR PA?”
Nadia also added in the comments section that her parents felt it was wasteful to throw the dead Koi fishes away hence proceeded to prepare them and cook them.
According to Nadia, her mother didn’t want to descale and clean the fish so her father did it, but her mother was the one that fried it.
“What’s weird is that she doesn’t want to clean the fish because she felt bad, but frying it and eating it is okay.”
A strange meal
Nadia’s post has since gone viral. Plenty of Malaysians expressed their disbelief and unwillingness to eat Koi fishes, who they consider pets, whilst others shared that they’ve had Koi fish dishes before.
“Either bury it and make a memorial for it or eat it rather than throw it out. It’s okay the koi is in heaven now.”
“My mum’s koi fish died a few months ago, she couldn’t clean and eat it so I did it while she just watched the rest of us eat it,” said another user.
Another user shared that they once fried 2 of their bacul fish for dinner because they were aggressive towards other tank mates and it bit their hand.
“Bite the hands that feed it will get itself fed,” added the user.
Koi owners, what would you do in this situation? Let us know in the comments.
