Scammers come in many unexpected forms, especially when they offer deals that seem too good to be true. Often, these offers appear so real that they’re hard to resist.
@bro_wong took to TikTok to recount an incident involving a woman who lost RM12,000 in a fraudulent car deal. The scammer posed as one of his employees from his car dealership, leading to the significant loss.
“I don’t have staff with that name”
Bro Wong met with the woman to investigate the issue further. During their conversation, she revealed that she had been dealing with someone she believed to be one of his employees, named Muhammad Zhariff.
Confused about the identity of this person, Wong inquired about him. The woman explained,
“He (Muhammad Zhariff) claimed to be working under you. I contacted him through the Facebook messenger from your page.”
After checking the Facebook page, Bro Wong discovered that it was not associated with his car dealership.
“Scammers are getting more creative”
In the video, the scammer instructed the woman to make an upfront payment of RM12,000 to “reserve” the vehicle, and she complied by transferring the money as requested.
The scammer went as far as creating fake websites and a Facebook page, mimicking Bro Wong’s business. They even stole content from Bro Wong’s account to deceive and attract potential buyers.
Bro Wong explained that the scammer had been impersonating one of his employees, and since the payment was sent to a personal account, there was little he could do to assist.
“If you’re looking to buy a car, always ensure the dealership is legitimate. When making a payment, double-check that it’s being made to the dealership’s official account, not to a salesperson or anyone else’s personal account.”
