Wisdom teeth are the teeth that start growing right behind our molars in our late teenage years or during our twenties. Some of us choose not to do anything about them as they don’t impact us day to day, but once they start hurting, removing the wisdom tooth is a no-brainer.
According to China Press, a 42-year-old woman in Kedah has passed away after a wisdom tooth extraction. WHAT!
According to the deceased’s husband, the deceased was diagnosed with thymoma (which is a type of tumour) back in 2013. She went through surgery and chemotherapy till 2017 when she was declared stable. After that, she still went for routine check-ups at the Penang Hospital.
In May 2019, she complained to her husband that her wisdom tooth was causing her pain. On 1st July, her husband then brought her to the dentist in the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital.
Her husband said that when they were in the dentist’s room, he explained to the dentist about his wife’s past medical records and asked if it would be risky to continue with the extraction of the wisdom tooth. The doctor then assured him that it will be completely fine, just that she’ll take longer to heal. The appointment for the extraction was set on 15th July.
Come the day of the appointment, the dentist removed the tooth and it took about 20 minutes. It is said that the bleeding didn’t stop, and she woke up the next day with a lot of blood on her pillow.
She went to the clinic opposite her home to ask for something to stop the bleeding. On 18th July, they noticed that there were several bruises on her legs. Then on the 19th, she had a headache and started throwing up black liquid.
On the 20th, she was sent to the hospital, and she went into a coma on the same day. In the wee hours of 21st July, she passed away, leaving behind 2 daughters with her husband.
The hospital said that the official cause of death was thymoma and intracranial hemorrhage. The family of the deceased says that she was declared stable during her check-ups after chemotherapy. They even checked with the dentist if it was safe for her to go through with the surgery. They think that it didn’t make sense to blame it on thymoma.
The hospital has not made any statements as of the time of writing.
Oh dear, we hope that the deceased will rest in peace and that her family will be able to cope with her absence. Losing a person so suddenly takes a very heavy toll on one’s emotions. All our prayers and thoughts go to the family.
