The timing of Chinese New Year (CNY) and Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivals are not set in stone and fluctuate according to the lunar calendar. That’s why we’ve been observing an earlier Hari Raya every year!
In past years, the dates for these festivals have even overlapped enough times for Malaysians to come up with the term Kongsi Raya or DeepaRaya, for when Deepavali occurred around Hari Raya.
But what about Christmas and CNY? There isn’t really a word for the two celebrations’ crossover but that’s not stopping Malaysians!
We all know that cleaning, decorating and overall preparing the house for festivities such as CNY can be a ton of work, so this Malaysian decided to work smarter instead of harder this time round.
Recently, @t0nyteh shared on his TikTok page a video of a “snow-covered” Chistmas tree adorned with small red CNY lanterns. Instead of a star at the top of the tree, there was a big red flower.
It’s believed that his mom had decided to save time and effort this year by combining both festivals’ decorations into one.
He captioned the video, “Chinese Christmas”.
Netizens are amused
In the comments, netizens expressed their amusement at the rare sighting and shared creative festive greetings.
