It’s no secret that there have been a lot of unsolved animal cruelty cases in Malaysia, but that doesn’t mean that anyone should go around and abuse animals as they please.

After all, the punishment for animal cruelty can be rather severe.

For example, a man was fined RM7,000, in default four months jail for cruelty to an animal by slashing a female dog with a machete. The 52-year-old man pleaded guilty to the charge after unreasonably causing unnecessary pain to the dog. The incident happened behind a workshop at Jalan Miri, Jinjang Utara between 4 and 5 January last year.

The charge originally carried a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to three years or both when convicted under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act, but a lawyer representing the accused told the court that defence and the prosecution had agreed to a plea bargain of an RM7,000 fine, to which the judge agreed with after hearing the submissions from both parties and taking into account the plea bargain.

As according to Bernama, a married couple that was feeding the stray dogs in the area found the carcass of the female dog with slash wounds on its leg and body, along with seven puppies who were presumed to be poisoned.

The man was also investigated by the Kuala Lumpur Service Department, who found a chicken pen belonging to the man, who then admitted to slashing dogs who entered the pen. A machete and rat poison were found at the chicken pen.

Nobody knows what more the man has done to the poor strays in the area considering his stash of rat poison but we genuinely hope that the man learns his lesson and leaves the poor strays alone.
