A Malaysian e-hailing driver was sentenced to 5 years in prison and a stroke of the cane by the Melaka Sessions Court after pleading guilty to a charge of robbing a gold store and injuring the wife of the store owner.
According to a report by Kosmo, Judge Haderiah Siri handed down the sentence to 29-year-old Melvin Yen Wei Shern, who was found guilty of robbery and intentionally injuring 70-year-old Koh Kim Lye at Kedai Emas Tai Kwong in Kampung Jawa, on May 22 (Thursday) at 11am.

Due to this, he was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code (Act 574), which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and is liable to a fine or whipping, if convicted.
He committed the robbery to help his girlfriend
It is understood that the man decided to rob the gold store because he wanted to help pay off his girlfriend’s debt to a loan shark, which involves a loan amount of more than RM200,000.
Lawyer, Kent Tan Chow Teng, who represented the man, appealed for a light sentence because the man was supporting his parents, who suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes.
The prosecution, which was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Ehsan Nasarudin, requested a proportionate sentence that will take into account the losses endured by the victim.
