Regardless of your job, does it matter what car you’re driving? Does what other people think of your ride matter?
In a recent podcast shared by Malaysian Jacky Hooi, he spoke to a Malaysian woman who works as an insurance agent and had something to share about her previous ride – a Perodua Axia.
“To me, what you drive does matter”
The woman admitted that when she was driving an Axia back then, she would park far away, out of her clients’ sight when meeting them.
“I was afraid that they would look down on me,” she said.
She elaborated on the reason why she avoided being seen with her Axia by her clients.
“I feared that the clients might thought I didn’t do well in my job, and refused to sign a deal with me.”
She said that one of her colleagues drove an Audi, and he would often deliberately put gifts for clients in the car, and then park the car at the door when he went to meet the customers. His colleagues had his way of telling clients about the fancy car he drove.
“Every time he was in the middle of a conversation, he would open his car door in front of the clients on purpose to let them know that he was driving a luxury car. I feel that this behaviour could convince the clients about your achievements, and increase your chances of locking a deal.”
She then added and said, “I believe the car you drive can represent your achievements.”
“The feeling of driving a car worth tens of thousands is different from driving a car worth hundreds of thousands. The whole atmosphere and energy stimulate you every day, and you will feel that you are a person who has achieved results. So, salesmen really need to drive better cars.”
To those who are seeing clients as part of your job, what do you think of her take?
