If you live on social media and follow celebrity culture, you would have heard of #BlockOut2024.
But, for those who don’t know what #BlockOut2024 is, it is basically an international campaign to call for the general public to unfollow and block Western celebrities and influencers who have remain silent in advocating for Palestine in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
A local Instagram page, blockout2024my, has since been created to call out Malaysian celebrities and influencers who have apparently chosen to not speak up against the war crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.
In one of their posts, blockout2024my shared their reasoning behind the creation of their page (in alignment with blockoutnow – the international page), “The Israeli occupation has been committing a GENOCIDE against Palestine. “Celebrities” and “influencers” have shamelessly remained silent or have been spreading lies and propaganda.”
“These celebrities and influencers make MILLIONS off of us. If the consumer (us) no longer has a means of seeing the products (posts, stories, ads), then their products lose money. Hence, the blocking. We don’t need them, they need us.”
The page highlights multiple local celebrities and influencers, either in green for being Palestine supporters or in red for being “complicit” in Israel’s crimes for not speaking out against it.
Among those mentioned in green are Faizal Tahir, Yuna and Daiyan Trisha, while those mentioned in red include Sean Lee, Amelia Henderson and Luqman Podolski.
“Imagine giving your time and money to celebrities who can’t even speak out about a genocide… stop the celebrity worship.”
“Remember the cause! This isn’t just a fun TikTok or Instagram trend. This is real life. This is for the thousands and thousands of children being slaughtered by the Israeli occupation. This is for the thousands of parents who had to go around and collect their children by their limbs,” blockout2024my added.
