When you get into an accident on the road there is often two ways to settle it. Either you settle on the side without the involvement of the authorities or you lodge a police report so you can claim from your insurance.

Although most of us may be inclined to settle without the need for the authorities, a recent story reminded users why its always best to lodge a formal police report on the accident.

Twitter user Turu, recently shared an image of his injuries which he sustained through a collision with another motorcycle.

He detailed his experience of how he ended up that way in a follow up tweet the following day.

“Actually the story of my accident is pretty funny as the person who hit me caused a lot of issues.”

The accident

Turu went on to explain how he had gotten into an accident. “I was going straight, Abu (not real name) came out of a 3-way junction without looking left or right and hit me in the middle.”

“I flew off and when I got up I immediately tried to see his number plate in case he were to run.”

“There were a lot of people who helped me, picked up my stuff and my motorcycle. Another food deliver rider named Azwar even helped me to deliver the food order I was carrying. But Abu didn’t sustain any injuries,” he added.

Accident

He explained that his motorcycle wasn’t too badly damaged apart from some defects to the gear and the feet holder.

“So I went to Abu and told him that we should go to the police station. He said he wants to wait for his brother. His brother Ali (not real name) then came. He scolded Abu for causing the accident and then turned to me and started blaming me.”

Turu said that initially Ali agreed to go to the police station but then he said that he wanted to settle it on the side.

Offer to settle

“He said that my motorcycle wasn’t too badly damaged and he would help me to repair it since he is a foreman. Since he wanted to settle, I asked him to also replace my watch. He refused. So we went to the police station,” he said.

Watch

When they got there, Ali asked Turu what he wanted to report for as the bike Abu was riding was uninsured.

“I wanted to report so that I do not need to use my own money to repair my motorcycle. I then agreed to settle.”

Turu then checked his bike to show the parts that needed fixing. “I said that there was a scratch on my rim, to which he replied ‘don’t tell me even this you want to repair… you’re acting too spoiled‘.”

Ali then offered to pay for his medical bills but much to Turu’s surprise, he took him to a government hospital.

Whilst there, Turu then noticed that his phone was also cracked due to the accident and immediately decided that a police report needed to be lodged.

Phone

When they went back to the police station, more of their relatives showed up and tried to pin the blame on Turu. Eventually Turu managed to lodge the police report but much to his surprise, the officer handling his case said that Abu’s motorcycle was in fact insured.

“This means that from the beginning they lied to me saying that they don’t have insurance to make sure that I do not report.”

“So the lesson is that whenever you get into an accident, it’s best to just settle it at the police station,” said Turu.

We hope that Turu gets the justice he deserves. Let’s take this as a reminder to lodge a police report whenever something happens.
