Malaysian food is one of the best in the world – there’s no disputing that. So whenever we, as Malaysians ourselves, get to see our cuisines shared in various locations across the globe, there’s no doubt that our hearts sing with glee and pride.
Such an instance was recently seen in a TikTok video by one Malaysian residing in the United Kingdom named Marhaidi Hanafi. In the clip shared to his page @marhaidi.hanafi, Marhaidi captured a brief moment of a fellow Malaysian named Doctor Syikin, as she ran her kuih muih stall in Liverpool.
At the top of the video, Doctor Syikin described multiple of her creations to a customer who was seeking to purchase some of her delicious creations. In particular, Doctor Syikin spoke about an item she labelled as pandan pudding, which similarly resembled what Malaysians more commonly know as seri muka.
Aside from that, some of Doctor Syikin’s other kuih for sale included banana fritters, caramel cake, lemon cake, rainbow sponge cake, and curry puffs. More familiar to Malaysians by local names, there was no doubt that we’d refer to them as cekodok pisang, kek pelangi, kek oren, and much more.
An absolute hit with the locals of Liverpool, many people flocked to Doctor Syikin’s store to try as many items as they could. For each piece of kuih, Doctor Syikin merely charges customers GBP1 (approximately RM6).
Throughout the video, Marhaidi stated that Doctor Syikin opens her stall as part of the Granby Street Market in Liverpool, which takes place every first Saturday of the month from 10am to 3pm.
“Different stalls sell vintage items, handcrafts, and other things like food from different countries. No exception, Malaysian kuih muih from Doctor Syikin is a favourite for people here. Other than curry puffs and banana fritters, nasi lemak is also a local favourite,” wrote Marhaidi in the caption of his post.
At the end of his clip, Marhaidi posed a question to viewers, asking them what they think Doctor Syikin should add to her stall next.
Making waves online, many Malaysians had options of what they thought Doctor Syikin should add, including roti jala, cucur udang, and kuih ketayap.
One user proudly said that curry puffs and banana fritters are truly making their way across the globe.
Nevertheless, multiple people even spoke about how proud they were to see Malaysian kuih travel to different countries and still be so loved by people from those places.
“The best! Continue highlighting Malaysian kuih muih to the world, let it be as well known as other foods too,” cheerfully commented one user.
