A local fashion brand founder’s recent TikTok post has earned her the ire of Malaysians online after she shared a video of herself shopping for new shoes.
The entrepreneur, Haliza Maysuri is the founder of the Muslimah fashion brand Bawal Exclusive, which predominantly sells hijabs. As shared by Lobak Merah, Haliza previously caused a stir by claiming that the hijabs her company sells are ‘cheap’ despite being priced up to RM1,200.
Her recent TikTok video seems to be a continuation of that controversial claim, as while buying a pair of high-heel shoes worth RM5,290, Haliza said that she feels guilty for wearing the cheap RM1,200 hijab.
As of the time of writing, the video has been viewed over 1.1 million times and garnered more than 13,100 likes. In the overlaid text of the video, the Bawal Exclusive founder said,
“I feel guilty wearing this cheap RM1,200 hijab. Because the pair of shoes I put on my feet is worth RM5,290. Whereas Hijab is something we put on our heads.”
Nevertheless, Haliza can be seen in the video buying at least a couple of pairs of the RM5,290 high-heel shoes and other shoes at the undisclosed store.
In the comments section, many Malaysians criticised the fashion brand founder for the ‘humble brag’ and for showing off her affluence.
Several commenters branded her as a show-off, with one netizen questioning the need to announce to everyone the expensive things she’s buying.
Besides that, one commenter jokingly said that the RM5,290 pair of high-heels Haliza bought looks exactly like a pair of RM13,90 in her possession.
