When was the last time you took the stairs?
On 26 October, the annual Empire State Building Run-Up (ESBRU) was held (the 2020 run-up was cancelled due to the pandemic). According to their website, it is the world’s first and most famous tower race; it comprises 86 flights which is equivalent to 1,576 stairs.
This year’s run-up was attended by a Malaysian tower runner known as Soh Wai Ching. Not only did he win the competition, he even became the first Asian to win the Empire State Building Run-Up! Soh won the competition by crossing the finish line at 10 minutes and 47 seconds, reported Astro Awani. For his win, he was awarded US$100,000 to donate to a charity of his choice.
Speaking on his experience, Soh took to his Instagram account.
“I am super thrilled to be the first Asian to win the Empire State Building Run Up and I was super excited to meet Sebastian Stan in person.”
“About the race, I didn’t do well and I am not satisfied with my performance as I am targeting for a sub 10 at least. I gave my best towards the end but I can definitely be much faster!”
Elaborating on that, the tower runner said that he is confident that he will be able to improve on his timing next year since he will prepare longer for it.
“I would like to thank my family, friends and sponsors for their continuous support. Thank you, everyone!”
Other than that, he has mentioned that he might be attempting a Double Guinness World Records which is still pending confirmation.
Thank you for your hard work, Soh. We’re looking forward to seeing more of him!
