The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSNJ) of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is working with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to investigate the arrest of a Malaysian suspect who tried to smuggle heroin, worth RM431.8 million, into Australia.
Based on a report by Astro Awani, the Australian authorities announced that the seizure is the country’s largest shipment of heroin, at 450 kilograms.
“The media has reported that a Malaysian citizen was arrested by the Australian authorities for trying to muggle 450 kilograms of heroin worth RM431.8 million into Australia,”
“The Royal Malaysia Police JSJN is currently working with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to conduct further investigations into the case,” shared Bukit Aman JSJN Director, Datuk Razarudin Husain.
He added that all necessary actions will be taken to ensure that drug distribution and smuggling activities that are a threat to the country can be eradicated without compromise.
According to the Australian police, the drugs were found in a ship’s container carrying ceramic tiles.
“The heroin was detected in a container shipping ceramic tiles from Malaysia to the port of Melbourne,”
“However, we are still investigating the source of the heroin. The detection found that 12,090 packages of heroin were found in the container,” said Krissy Barret, the Australian Federal Police’s Southern Commanding Commissioner.
The suspect is charged with importing and attempting to possess controlled drugs in large quantities for commercial distribution, for which the maximum penalty for the offense is life in prison.
Police have also estimated that the seizure will save 225 lives.
