In a series of resignations that have since taken many Malaysians by surprise, another prominent face in local politics has since tendered her resignation, according to the Malay Mail.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Latheefa, who has been a staple figure in exposing many of Malaysia’s corruption cases, has officially resigned from her position as chief.
This comes after a source that was aware of the agency’s developments told the English daily yesterday night (5th March 2020), which is further confirmed by a TV3 report of Latheefa’s resignation during their Buletin Utama segment at 8pm.
It is understood that Latheefa’s deputy, Datuk Seri Azam Baki, will be replacing her position as chief on Monday. While the arrangement may be a temporary one, it is believed that he will likely replace Latheefa permanently as chief.
Latheefa, a prominent human-rights lawyer prior to her appointment as MACC chief, replaced Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull, after his contract was permitted to expire ahead of its deadline on May 17, 2020. She was meant to serve a two year tenure.
This resignation is especially eye-raising, as a number of high-profile corruption trials, including Najib’s, are underway. What do you guys think will happen in the wake of Latheefa’s resignation?
