What would you do if you found out that you had won the lottery? Maybe some of you would say that you would clear off your family’s debt, buy a house or a car, or go on a trip.

However, it’s different for this monk in Thailand who chose to give everything away.

Phra Kru Phanom Prechakon is an abbot’s secretary at Wat Phra That Phanom Woramahawihan in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand.

One day, while he was praying to the Thao Wessuwan statue, he saw an auspicious number which was ‘605’. Taking that as a sign, he made a mental note to buy lottery tickets.

Monk Lotto Tickets

When he went out for dinner with his relatives, a couple of lottery sellers refused to sell tickets to him as he only wanted to buy 3 and not 10 (which is a row).

He chanced upon a third lottery seller who begged him to buy from her as the pandemic had affected her income. Even though the end number was not ‘605’ but ‘905’, he bought 3 of those tickets, reported KhaoSod.

When the draw came on 1 March, he found out that he had won 6 million baht (RM756,072) per ticket, totalling 18 million baht (RM2,268,216).

The monk then decided to give back to society and the temple instead rather than keeping it for himself.

He donated 4 million baht (RM504,048) to the temple and he listed out the many monastic schools and charities that he had donated to in a list.

In addition to that, he also gave out 500 baht (RM63) to each of the monks, locals and workers at the temple.

For 2 days, he sat in front of the Thao Wessuwan statue and gave out money to the people in the area. The queue was more than 1KM long and because of the sweltering heat, there were quite a few incidents of fainting.

Well, this monk is certainly very selfless, we hope that he will continue living his best life!
