A Singaporean woman recently took to social media to share a long list of rules and regulations for her maid to abide by which caused a debate amongst netizens.
In an Instagram video shared by Sgfollowsall, the employer, who was off camera, claimed that it took her 45 minutes to write a 12-pointer “rules and regulations” on a white board.
On the whiteboard, she wrote that it “can be amended anytime” and that the rules and regulations included:
- No using handphones during working hours unless the employers calls
- Not opening the door for strangers
- Not going out of the house without permission
- Always keep the house clean
- Bath after cooking and before sleep
- Only use phone at night after kids are asleep (1 hour usage)
- Do not lock your room
- Do not waste electricity and water
- Sleep latest by 9:30pm – 10pm and wake up by 7am
- Maintain personal hygiene
- Stay in area covered by camera when employer not home unless bathing or doing housework
- Do not turn on the aircond without permission
The employer mentioned that it took her 45 minutes to write down all these rules and regulations and the helper’s to do list.
Besides that, the employer cheekily suggested if she can ask her maid to make “cold calls” during her free time. It is unclear what she meant by cold calls.
Netizens divided over employer’s treatment towards her maid
The comments section were filled by outraged netizens expressing their anger towards the employer for treating her maid like a ‘slave’.
“Crazy. Did you lay down all these rules upon yourself when you didn’t have a helper?”
“To my knowledge a helper is also human like us, not a robot,” added the user.
Another said that it looked more like law rather than rules and regulations.
Some argued that it’s normal
On the other hand, some netizens said that it’s perfectly reasonable and acceptable for the employer to enforce such rules and regulations on an employee.
“Office also has rules. What is the big deal? Migrant domestic workers are not privileged princesses to be treated like queens. They are employees,” commented a user.
Some said that only those who have helpers will understand.
