The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has reprimanded tourism players in Semporna, Sabah for unhygienic practices and the dirty environment of the tourist areas there.
Moreover, its Minister, Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing has issued a warning that if the issues are not resolved, MOTAC has no choice but to issue a red notice.
In a Facebook post, the MOTAC Minister revealed that his ministry has received many reports of the unruly environment from tourists who visited Semporna.
Among the alleged issues brought up by these tourists include extremely dirty environments, with garbage that produces foul scents. Furthermore, there are also complaints of food poisoning, hospitality services that don’t fit the price (towels and dirty bedsheets), bug infestation and more.
Tiong King Sing asserted,
“I take every complaint seriously and these issues are not new! The issues have been happening for a few months and I have personally stressed to the relevant parties to take immediate action. I am truly disappointed that the issues continue to happen.”
The MOTAC Minister further shared that there was another recent complaint of food poisoning from a tourist, to the point that they had to be admitted to a hospital and undergo IV therapy.
He asserted that this incident is really serious as it involves public and tourists’ safety. He thus calls for immediate action from Semporna tourism players as beyond the safety issues, such incidents gravely affect our country’s tourism industry image.
MOTAC thus instructs all relevant parties, including resort operators, restaurants, hotels, homestays and the local government to improve and upgrade all aspects of tourism.
