Times are bad nowadays, and many people are looking for ways to reduce their expenditures or to earn more money.
Recently, people distributed free bottles to Malaysians at markets while others were put on the fences of people’s homes.
The colourful bottles had a singular QR code printed on them, and at the side, there were promises of an RM200 cash voucher for those who scanned it.
According to both Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf has said they have not received any reports about this yet.
“This does not mean that the QR code is safe. The public still needs to remain vigilant and not take risks for the sake of benefits. Remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch.”
The police elaborated further, saying that suspicious QR codes might introduce viruses, require users to download software, or steal personal information after being scanned.
He also mentioned that one should not pick up strange objects of unknown origins near your house.
“Some fraud groups use this technique to bait their victims.”
With how creative scammers nowadays are, we should remain vigilant by staying updated with the news.
