The current spate of heavy rains and cool weather is a mostly a welcome break for Malaysians, as used as we are to the scorching, sweltering heat that’s all too common here.
Unfortunately, in some areas of the country, the heavy rains have led to floods, and over 1,200 people from Selangor, Penang, Negri Sembilan, Perak and Johor have been evacuated, reported The Star. That figure comes as our weather authority, the MetMalaysia, has said that Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak can expect thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds.

Over 700 people were evacuated in Selangor alone, and the state is among those MetMalaysia has said can expect heavier than usual rainfall this monsoon season. The other states expected to experience this volume of rain are Perlis, Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
However, the northeast monsoon will begin early next month, and the east coast states will begin experiencing the same weather conditions. Coastal areas are also likely to be at risk of severe flooding at high tide!
Whew, the cool weather may be great for most of us, but there’s always the danger of flooding! Hopefully, those evacuated will be able to go home safe and sound, and that the damage is easily reparable. Stay safe out there!
