Mat lajak or basikal lajak, whichever way you address them, there’s nothing good or positive associated with this group nowadays. This group as a menace to society, with their reckless behaviour already resulting in fatal accidents. This hobby may seem like a waste of time to many with no redeeming qualities. But, according to our Youth and Sports Minister, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, there is some good in this hobby and he is now planning to cultivate these riders.

He said that there are two categories of mat lajak, one that likes to modify their bicycles, and the other is filled with those who have a “need for speed.” Those in the first category can be taught in the mechanical and design industry where they’ll learn how to make bicycles that not only look good but also present better safety features. The mat lajaks in the second category, meanwhile. can be taught and trained to join competitive races to represent the country in cycling competitions since they clearly have the skills and the speed.

” These cycling workshops got overwhelming support from the basikal lajak community.”

According to The Star, the minister also said that before moving forward, the ministry will get input from these communities to make sure these kids’ passion goes to the right place and their talents are not wasted without ignoring the safety aspect. He made this statement after a call for an act to be formed outlawing shops or individuals from modifying their bicycles into basikal lajak or mosquito bicycles.

We love the optimism shown by the minister and hope that he is right in that there is some good in this dangerous trend. It would be a waste to see these talents to go to waste.
