A man from Central Java has recently made headlines for paying 155 million rupiah (approx. RM43,550) worth of alimony with coins weighing 890 kilogrammes!
Dwi Susilarto, a government employee, packed the money in 14 sacks and used a trolley to deliver them to the Karanganyar Religious Court in Central Java on Thursday (Aug 23).
According to the Jakarta Post, as quoted in The Straits Times, Dwi was sued by his former wife Hermi Setyowati for “financially neglecting” her for nine years. The court had ordered him to pay 178 million rupiah (approx. RM50,000) in alimony to Hermi.
“I’m only a low-ranking employee, how could I get Rp 178 million?” Dwi said.
He revealed that his friends had donated some money to help him.
“My friends decided to help me by donating the money, but most of it is in coins. They helped me collect the money, some even brought buckets and sacks of coins,” he added.
In three months’ time, Dwi managed to collect 155 million rupiah (approx. RM43,550) in coins and 23 million rupiah (approx. RM6,460) in banknotes of 2,000 to 100,000 rupiah denominations. With the help of his two friends, he carried the money to the courtroom using a wheelbarrow.
Hermi, on the other hand, did not find this amusing in any sense. In fact, it was reported that there was a heated argument between the camps supporting Dwi and Hermi in the courtroom as neither side wanted to count the coins.
Hermi, eventually, accepted the money but said that she felt extremely humiliated by her ex-husband.
“This is such an embarrassment because he considers me to be a beggar,” she said.
Well, we are just glad that the ex-husband and wife have settled their dispute. What do you think of this? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!
