During a wedding, it’s customary for the parents of the groom to give a dowry to the bride’s family, but this Thai businessman has turned the rules upside down! A post by Anont Rotthong, a durian trader, has gone viral after he pledged to give 10 cars, a house, and 10 million baht (approx. RM1.28 million) in cash to the man who can win his daughter’s heart.
The post, which was uploaded to his Facebook page, displayed pictures of his 27-year-old daughter, as well as himself surrounded by stacks of cash, and a small chunk of his undoubtedly extensive gold collection.
According to Kwong Wah, Anont is a durian trader in the southern Thai province of Chumphon who, from the likes of it, has done very well for himself. Now that he is older, he wishes to find a worthy suitor for his youngest daughter, in order to pass on his durian trade and export business to the next generation. In fact, that’s what the RM1.28 million is for – to help run the business.
In the post, he also outlined four main criteria that his future son-in-law should have:
1) He does not need to possess lofty academic qualifications; being literate is enough
2) He should be hardworking and ambitious
3) He should be thrifty
4) He must love durians
Sounds like pretty reasonable characteristics to us! When the post started circulating, some thought it was a joke at first, until he reaffirmed his seriousness to local media outlets.
Aside from looking for someone to inherit his successful business, he also wanted to see his youngest child settle down with someone, as she is the last among his four children to remain single.
Naturally, as the post gained more attention, numerous candidates have thrown their names into the ring, either via social media and the more traditional method of phone calls. Some of the more dashing candidates were reported to have features similar to his daughter, making them physically compatible, while others went to the length of dressing like Anont himself to ‘market’ themselves.
More important, the future bride herself, Kansita Rotthong, make of this unusual search for a husband told Bangkok Post what she thought of this search.
“At first, I thought my dad was joking but it turns out he’s seriously looking for a son-in-law. My siblings and I respect his decision.”
Unusual as it may be, we believe Anont has his daughter’s best interests at heart, and genuinely hope he and his daughter can find the happy ending they both seek! Perhaps you know someone who fits the criteria and they might want to try as well!
