A young man in China got the shock of his life when he found out the former owner of his house had been living in the basement for 7 years.

The man, who only wanted to be called Li, said he bought a second house in the city centre for almost 2 million yuan back in 2018, according to Sinar Harian.

He came across a hidden door

Li explained how he made the surprising discovery when he stumbled upon a hidden door behind the stairs, which led to a basement space he had never even noticed before.

When he went in, he described it as spacious, with ventilation, lighting, and even a small bar, making it feel like a fully functional living area.

Upon further inspection, he noticed clear signs that someone had been living there recently, which made him feel uncomfortable about the whole situation.

The former owner claimed the basement wasn’t part of the sale

Li then reached out to the previous owner, Zhang, and claimed that she had purposely hidden the basement’s existence during the sale.

The former owner of the property argued that the basement wasn’t part of the sale and was still considered her private space.

However, he maintained that the basement was rightfully his, as he had paid the full price for the house.

He decided to take the matter to court, and the decision was in Li’s favour.

Zhang was ordered to pay compensation, and the court confirmed Li’s legal ownership of the basement room.
