Last week, news of a college student making rape jokes concerning a female student sparked outrage among Malaysian netizens.
Since then, the incident garnered polarising reactions from Malaysians, some of them in support of the female student for calling them out, and others in support of the male student.
Over the weekend, the female student posted updates on the unfortunate situation on her Twitter, saying that she was called in by the college’s administration.
She was dissatisfied with the way the college handled the entire situation, as she stated that they grilled her, implying that it was her fault that the situation blew up and got messy.
She felt the way the college staff addressed the problem was one-sided because they kept stressing on how wrong she was for bringing this situation to light on social media.
It turns out that one of the three people who grilled her on the matter personally knew the student who made the rape joke, thus making her believe they had a biased perspective.
She was then advised by them to take down her posts regarding the situation and that the male student would get appropriate punishment.
Later that week, she said the student who made the inappropriate jokes apologised to her. However, she found out that the college didn’t take any action against him!
What made things worse was that she suspects that this student tried to ruin her reputation to their seniors. She mentioned this because she received a phone call from one of her seniors asking her if she was going to take legal action.
With all of this going on, the female student’s parents thought it wasn’t a good idea for her to stay on in the college, fearing for her safety. So, she left the institution.
Since she worked so hard to get a scholarship to get into the college, she was understandably very upset by the way things turned out.
Thankfully however, a day after she posted the tweets, the college put out an official statement on their Facebook page addressing the incident.
According to the statement, the male student received punishment in the form of community service.
WORLD OF BUZZ reached out to the student to get her thoughts on the matter. She said,
For me, I didn’t intend for it (her Tweets on the incident) to go viral but since it did, I just want to stress the importance of women’s rights.
I just want to say don’t be afraid to voice out. If you feel uncomfortable about something, tell someone, make a difference. Don’t sit quietly and expect change to happen.
On the recent statement made by the college, she said,
He (the male student) has already gotten appropriate punishment via the college and that’s what’s most important. Justice has been served and I hope he learns his lesson.
She ended her statement by thanking the college for taking action and not brushing off the matter.
We’re thankful the matter has been resolved and that the male student received punishment for his actions. Let this be a lesson to everyone to never take rape as a joke and to treat everyone with respect.
