We understand taxi drivers need to make a living, but going to unethical lengths just to get extra cash is never okay!
According to Harian Metro, a local taxi driver was just caught by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) for charging his foreign passengers an exorbitant fee.
The driver reportedly drove his passenger from Jalan Bukit Petaling to Kota Raya, which is a short drive less than 10 kilometres lasting about 8 to 10 minutes based on Waze and Google Maps. Despite the relatively short drive, he charged his passenger a whopping RM160 for the journey!
Understandably outraged by the amount he was forced to pay, the Myanmar national took it upon himself to report the driver to SPAD at the Southern Integrated Terminal (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur last night.
A representative from SPAD told Harian Metro that they managed to find the driver near the terminal.
“SPAD then apprehended and questioned the taxi driver. He claimed that he just charged the passenger RM100.”
Even RM100 for a 10-minute ride is too much!
The representative went on to say that the taxi driver’s vehicle has since been confiscated for the purposes of their ongoing investigations. The case is still being investigated under the Land Public Transport Act 2010 and notice 80 under the same act for not using a fare meter.
We’re glad SPAD took swift action against this driver, and we hope that he has learnt his lesson from this!
