Domestic helpers are definitely one of the best additions to families who are often busy with their career and have no time to tidy up their houses. That being said, many families would choose to hire domestic helpers so that they can help around the house and take care of the kids or the elderly.

Just recently, according to Sin Chew Daily, a domestic helper in Singapore was caught stealing her employer’s ATM card. According to the 74-year-old employer, she hired a domestic helper mainly for the reason of helping her take care of her husband who is bed-ridden.

“She gets paid $700SGD (RM2,288) a month and she’s aware that the ATM card is placed in a safe”, she said.

She mentioned that she wrote her pin number down for her helper as she would need help when it comes to heading out and going to the ATM. She never thought that her helper would then proceed to steal the card and use up the money.

Back in March, the helper stole $500SGD (RM1,634) but the employer was unaware. Following that, the helper stole her ATM cards multiple times and when she found out that her card has been stolen, her bank account was only left with $200SGD (RM653).

“I won the lottery ma’am”

She mentioned that she wasn’t aware that her helper was stealing her money until she noticed that the helper has been buying loads of clothes at a time. “One time, she even treated me to some food and when I asked her about it, she told me that she won the 4D”, she said.

Not thinking much about it, she went on with her life until one day when she decided to check her account, she realised that she only had $200SGD (RM653) left. The helper then begged her to not make a police report and said that she’s willing to continue working without salary.

“I told my daughter about it, and she insisted that we make a police report as the helper may repeat the same mistake again, given that she has no salary anymore”, she added.

Prior to this, her daughter had persuaded her to transfer over $10.5k SGD (RM34,320) to their joint account and recalling back, she’s thankful that she did it, if not her loss would be greater.

At the end, she decided to go ahead with the police report and sue her domestic helper. The court found the helper guilty and sentenced her to 7-months in jail.

Please be wary when it comes to your bank details and don’t give it away to anyone else to protect your money. Do you think the helper got what she deserved? Let us know in the comments below.
