A former Minister, who had served in the Cabinet before the COVID-19 pandemic, has provided a statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding alleged bribes of approximately RM5 million and a luxury Lamborghini vehicle.

According to a report by Berita Harian, the former Minister, who held office for a brief period, was previously charged in court for several corruption cases some years ago, and is now under investigation following allegations of embezzlement while serving in a Ministry.

A former Minister is under investigation for allegedly receiving bribes

The former Minister is believed to have accepted the bribes in relation to a billboard project and land transfer in the country’s capital.

MACC Chief Commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, has since confirmed that an investigation has been opened under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009.

A total of 16 witnesses, including government employees and company owners, also had their statements recorded to assist in the investigation into both cases.

The luxury car is believed to have been given by a billboard manufacturing company, whereas a high-value piece of government land was allegedly transferred to a prominent property developer, who allegedly provided a bribe of RM5 million.

“The former Minister appeared at the MACC Headquarters in Putrajaya this morning (29 December) to have their statement recorded, and investigations are now tracing the source of the payment for the luxury car.”

“As for the land case, initial investigations found that the land that was previously gazetted for the construction of a surau was transferred to a proxy company,” a source shared.
