A group of luxury car drivers in Shah Alam offered a variety of excuses for “missing” their road tax renewals, and they were surprisingly blunt about it when caught by Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers.
The law enforcement officers carried out a targeted operation, known as Ops Luxury, on Wednesday (1 April) at Persiaran Setia Perdana in Shah Alam. During the operation, numerous high-end vehicles were pulled over for inspections of their road tax and insurance documentation.

From forgetfulness to fleets of cars
In a Facebook post by the Selangor State JPJ and a subsequent report by Sinar Harian, officers confirmed the seizure of five luxury vehicles, including a BMW, a Mini Countryman, a Denza, a Tesla, and a Toyota Alphard. The drivers, aged between 30 and 63, were detained during the operation, which ran from 10:56 AM until 1:27 PM.
Despite the polished exteriors of the cars, authorities uncovered a surprising reality: all the vehicles had expired road tax, some for as long as two years. Even more concerning was the fact that none of the vehicles had valid insurance coverage.
Accountability and prior offences
When questioned, the drivers offered a range of excuses. Some claimed financial difficulties, while others insisted they were too busy to manage the renewals.
A few even admitted that because they owned so many vehicles, they had simply lost track of the expiry dates. In one instance, the vehicle was registered under a company, raising further questions regarding corporate accountability.

Further background checks revealed that two of the drivers already had prior offences on record with the JPJ. All five vehicles were seized and towed to the JPJ Shah Alam headquarters for further action.
Owning an expensive vehicle does not exempt a driver from their legal responsibilities. In fact, it makes accountability even more vital; every decision made on the road impacts not only the driver but every other road user sharing the journey.
