Recently, a vacancy ad for the position of a Class 4 (heavy motor car and motor tractors over 2,500kg) driver in Singapore has gone viral in the Republic for a rather peculiar reason. Posted by Preethi Engineering on Singaporean government job portal MyCareersFuture, netizens were perplexed at its job requirements, whereby one of the criteria is for applicants to hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
Wait, since when do you need one to be a driver? Doesn’t the job require you to only have the required license as well as experience?
Well, if the question above is going through your head, then you’re definitely not alone. Many netizens posed the same question, with many joking that maybe jobs such as a forklift driver would require a PhD or that local universities would be offering bachelor’s degree courses on how to be a truck driver in the future.
Furthermore, having a bachelor’s degree isn’t even the hardest requirement on the job listing, whereby it also requires more than 10 years of driving experience as well as willingness to work night shift, overtime and 6 days per week. That’s a pretty laborious job requirement for a position that offers between SGD2,800 (RM8900) and SGD3,800 (RM12,079) per month.
Well, according to AsiaOne, Preethi Engineering confirmed that the listing was not a typo and that the position does indeed require a bachelor’s degree. This is because the driver is actually also required to attend meetings with developers to discuss building projects. However, that particular job information was not disclosed in the listing.
Regardless, it seems that the overall requirements, job responsibilities and remuneration package don’t seem to interest that many people. As of the time of writing, only one person has applied for the position despite it going viral and being published on the site since 8 July 2022. Or maybe not many individuals have the qualifications required for the job?
