Always keep an eye on the people around you, because you’ll never know what they’re going through in their lives.
A fire broke out in a longhouse at Mukah, Sarawak on 12 September at 11:56 pm. A total of five homes were destroyed in the flames, and 36 people lost their homes.
Investigations had shown that a 31-year-old man was responsible for this. He began by pouring petroleum onto the floor of his living room, and he fled to a nearby forest to attempt suicide. In the early hours of Friday morning (13 September), Rumah Tinggang Anjang at Sungai Sebakong was being engulfed in a raging fire, according to Sarawak Tribune. Fortunately, no one was injured from the fire.
The longhouse consists of five homes, and the suspect lives at the 4th home with his wife. The fire completely burnt the longhouse down, leaving the other four families homeless.
DSP Jimmy Panyao, Mukah’s police chief, reported that the man slit his own throat with a knife after setting the longhouse on fire. However, he survived from his suicide attempt and he was sped to Mukah Hospital for treatments.
What was strange was that the suspect’s wife, Senorita Igang, told the police that she did witness her husband flooding their home with petroleum. Unsure of his motives, Igang mentioned that there’s nothing wrong with their marriage and they haven’t argued prior to the incident. She added that she doesn’t understand why her husband acted that way.
So far, this case is still under investigations, and the reasons for arson and suicide attempt are still unannounced.
We don’t know what he could be experiencing in his life to cause him to take his own life, and possibly harming the others as well. We do hope that he gets the support and help he needs.
