Have you ever wondered what’s the difference between the “Use by” and “Best before” labels on a food product? Are they the same?
On 16 June 2023, Malaysia’s Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN) uploaded an infographic and video, educating Malaysian consumers on the difference between the “Use by” and “Best before” labels.
The label “Use by” or “Use before” indicates that the food is safe to consume before the stated date. Therefore, food that has passed the “Use by” date should not be eaten and should be discarded.
The label “Best by” or “Best before”, on the other hand, indicates that the food is in its best condition before the stated date. After it has passed the “Best before” date, the food will have reduced quality in terms of freshness, texture, aroma, taste, and nutrition.
However, it can still be eaten if it smells, looks, and tastes fine. Otherwise, you should discard it if it seems rotten.
