During this festive season, many people are going out to spend time with their family and friends.
The Kota Kinabalu City Council confirmed in a Facebook post that they had an influx of visitors in their public parks, such as Segama Waterfront and Taman Awam Teluk Likas, which resulted in a horrible aftermath.
Many littered the floors of public parks, angering the city council because it affected the city’s image.
“Pictures and videos of the parks where rubbish is everywhere clearly shows the mentality of some people who still think that keeping places clean are the responsibility of the local authorities.”
It is said that the rubbish in both parks has become so bad that it is starting to make the visitors uncomfortable.
The city council then deployed the cleaning department to sweep up Segama Waterfront, and the trash they collected weighed 200kg!
The local authorities also added big trash cans in the park to ensure it is adequate.
At the same time, DBKK says that it will issue compounds to those who were caught littering and might even bring them to court if necessary under the Anti-Litter Bylaws 1984 (Amendment 2005).
Even after this warning (which seems to have fallen on deaf ears), many are still littering at Segama Waterfront, according to a survey by DBKK on 12 April.
Keeping public spaces clean is the collective responsibility of the community and local authorities!
