Food markets or food streets are common and important features of the food culture in many Asian countries. For example, Korea is famous for its numerous food markets, Thailand for it’s food streets and Malaysia for our pasar malam.
While these food markets and streets are similar in style, the food served is different so it’s always exciting to visit and experience them.
Recently, a Korean content creator in Malaysia, Tara Choi (@tara_choi_) brought her parents who’re originally from Busan to the pasar malam on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
They tried different foods at the pasar malam including kuih peneram, cheese-topped fried banana fritters and a cendol beverage. They also tapao-ed a few bags of food to enjoy at home.
One of the things that shocked Tara’s dad was how cheap the food was! He couldn’t believe that a stick of satay costs only 200 won (RM0.68) instead of 2000 won (RM6.8) as street food in Korean usually costs 1000 to 2000 won (RM3.40 – RM6.80)
Overall, It was a fun and immersive experience for Tara and her parents because Tara was able to show her parents how she orders in Malay and her dad was also able to learn how to order in Malay.
One vendor even recognised Tara from her TikTok videos, so she tried to introduce her parents to the vendor. “Me, mother, father,” Tara said in Malay.
A wholesome time
Below the video, netizens commented on how adorable it is watching Tara’s parents enjoy their tour of the pasar malam and asked her to post more content of her parents.
“Tara’s dad saying ‘One, thank you’ is so cute.”
“Their family looks well-mannered. Not arrogant.”
“I’m the one who feels happy seeing her bring her parents here.”
